5 IDEAS TO INSPIRE YOU TO GET WALKING THIS SUMMER

It’s time to get walking this May! Not only does walking help you maintain a healthy weight and prevent health conditions, but it can also improve your mental well-being. And as if that wasn’t enough, May marks the start of National Walking Month, making it the perfect time to get started. With thunderstorms (hopefully!) out the way and sunny summer just around the corner, the conditions are primed for you to get outside and get walking!

So, without further ado, we bring you five ideas to inspire you to get walking this summer.

1. HAVE A FAMILY WALKING ADVENTURE

Who says exercise must be done alone? Not only is walking good for your health, but it’s a great way to connect and socialise with those we love most. Your children or grandchildren can make you see walking differently: get walking together and re-discover your local area through their eyes. Let the little ones in your life take you for a walk this weekend and combine family fun with exercise.

2. GET SNAP HAPPY!

Capturing moments makes walking even more interesting. Get walking this weekend and take your smartphone or camera along and snap your local sunset or town centre. You’ll savour the memory and maybe even inspire others to get walking too! See how many hidden treasures you can find in your local area. Or go on a real treasure hunt. Geocaching is a network of hide and seek containers hidden all over the world!

3. TAKE A MINDFUL MEANDER

Don’t let a hectic week get you down. Walking is the perfect way to zone out and rid yourself of negative thoughts. Like any other cardiovascular exercise, brisk walking boosts endorphins, which can reduce stress hormones and also alleviate depressive symptoms. Don’t forget to take time for yourself and to absorb your surroundings – sights, smells and sounds.

4. WALK YOUR WAY TO 30 ACTIVE MINUTES

Power walking is a great way to stay healthy, boosting fitness and energy levels. You’ll get further in your 30 minutes too. Try walking on different surfaces and inclines – it uses different muscles and will therefore strengthen them as well. It’s easy to build this into your daily routine: get off the bus a stop early at the bottom of the hill, park further away from the entrance to the shops, take a longer detour through the park, or walk the kids to school. It may take a little longer, but your body and mind will thank you!

5. TAKE A WALKING MEETING

Get some fresh air and a change of scenery, while boosting your energy and productivity. In a recent Westfield Health survey, it was revealed that 55% of UK workers eat lunch at their desks and half of us only get up from our desks to go to the toilet during the whole working day. Studies have linked long periods of sitting with being overweight, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer. Sitting for long periods of time is also thought to slow down the metabolism. On the flip side, several studies show that walking during lunch breaks boosts mood, productivity and ability to handle stress. So go and inspire your whole office to get involved today: get your colleagues walking to feel energised and start the week with a smile!
