FORGET COUNTING 1000 STEPS, FOCUS ON BRISK WALKING FOR BIGGEST BENEFIT

Focus on brisk walking, rather than just counting steps, is the message Thriving Workplaces are encouraging residents to act on over the summer to improve their health.

Brisk walking is the chosen activity to support an estimated 3 million middle-aged adults that are physically inactive across the country. Thriving Workplaces are supporting the Public Health England and the Royal College of GPs Active 10 campaign.

Moderate intensity physical activity means getting the heart rate up and breathing faster. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking a day is an easy way for adults to introduce more moderate intensity physical activity into their day. Brisk walking can reduce the risk of early death by up to 15%.

Watch the videos below for more information on how to make a difference to your health by walking more:

Throughout the summer Thriving Workplaces are sharing ways to relieve stress in your workforce through walking. Use our tips for brisk walking to lose weight and improve the mood of your employees through walking. The key to getting more from your walk is focusing on the intensity instead of the number of steps.

Use our resources to get inspired for ways you can fit ten minutes of brisk walking into your daily routine, and check out our Facebook page for quick tips to help you get most out of your short exercises.

It is also worth using the resources if you’re trying to stop smoking. Moderate intensity physical activity can reduce the withdrawal symptoms if you’re on a journey to stop smoking for good. The resources will also be especially useful if you’re trying to reduce the symptoms of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
